MicroPilot Receives $2 Million Contribution
MicroPilot has received a $2 million contribution towards the goal of safely flying UAVs over populated areas.
June 07, 2018 – Stony Mountain, Canada –MicroPilot, leader of the HI-RISE research consortium, has received a $2 million contribution towards its $5 million project to develop systems and processes that will allow software certification to DO-178C airworthiness standards. The goal is to demonstrate a level of software reliability that allows regulators to permit UAVs to operate over cities and towns. This latest project brings MicroPilot one step closer to helping UAVs realize their full potential.
Under MicroPilot’s leadership, the HI-RISE Consortium is undertaking a project with the aim of improving the speed of UAV software certification with the greater goal of enabling the certification of UAVs to DO-178C standards for use over populated areas. “This is such a large project because the software and certification process for DO-178C compliance is complex and difficult,” says Howard Loewen, President of MicroPilot. “MicroPilot and the HI-RISE consortium are always looking for new and innovative ways to assure regulators that the software is reliable.”
MicroPilot will use this contribution to further its goals to improve the regulatory and software certification framework for UAVs; thereby, reducing the cost and time needed to certify a UAV and help the technology achieve its full potential.
About HI-RISE
HI-RISE is a project labeled by ITEA, a part of the EU’s Eureka industrial R&D funding agency. This project is being undertaken by a consortium of companies from different nations under the leadership of MicroPilot Inc. HI-RISE aims to allow expanding applications of UAS by increasing the level of safety through DO-178C software certification, and mixed UAS-manned aircraft airspace governed by current ATM rules and regulations. A feasible certification methodology on low-cost UAS – the main aspects of the HI-RISE project – are key to seamless integration for non-segregated airspace.
